Women are more susceptible and less adaptable than males in flood disasters due to socio-cultural barriers perpetuated by society. The objective of this research is to explore the challenges impede women’s ability to adapt and increase their capacity in flood-affected areas of Bangladesh. To accomplish this goal, a qualitative research approach was utilized, including Focus Group Discussions with six unique groups, and conducting In-depth interviews with a total of thirty participants. The research illustrates that women’s susceptibility issues are worsened by rural communities and flood disasters due to their lack of adaptability. This is mostly attributed to the patriarchal culture prevalent in rural Bangladesh, which poses challenges in acquiring the necessary knowledge, skills, resources, and capacity for adaption. Hence, this article argues in favour of the government’s unwavering commitment to effectively utilizing the complete potential of women to enhance their ability to adapt and integrate them into the broader fabric of society, thereby promoting positive societal progress by reducing their vulnerability.
Kamrun Nahar Nor Azlin Tajuddin Szariannie Sulaiman ##submission.copyrightStatement## 2024-04-28 2024-04-28 9 4 e002794 e002794 10.47405/mjssh.v9i4.2794 Unpacking the Realities of Digital Leadership Among School Leaders: A Quantitative Study https://msocialsciences.com/index.php/mjssh/article/view/2801
In the age of globalization, technology has emerged as a pervasive force reshaping various sectors, including education and organizational management. Scholarly investigations have demonstrated that teaching gifted and talented students must address their needs as well as nurture their talents. Meeting the needs of gifted students in diverse classrooms has become a major problem for teachers. Differentiated instruction is one of the methods of instruction used with gifted children in programs. The idea that coping with all students equally is no longer effective, especially among gifted students. This emphasizes the importance of suitable teaching approaches, which include differentiated instruction (DI) as a fundamental solution, although challenging. Thus, this research aims to evaluate the level of understanding and the barriers faced by novice teachers in the implementation of differentiated instruction. This study was conducted at a boarding school located in Malaysia. The data were collected using a quantitative approach. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS software. The research revealed that novice teachers generally have knowledge and implement differentiated instruction during class. However, the amount of time taken for preparation becomes the major barrier to the implementation of differentiated instruction. The study also highlighted the need for professional development courses to support the implementation of differentiated instruction for gifted students.
Suganty Kanapathy ##submission.copyrightStatement## 2024-04-28 2024-04-28 9 4 e002778 e002778 10.47405/mjssh.v9i4.2778 Exploring the Connection Between Attitudes Towards New Chinglish and Social Media Among Chinese College Students https://msocialsciences.com/index.php/mjssh/article/view/2783
New Chinglish has emerged as an undeniable and popular trend on Chinese social media platforms, particularly among Chinese college students. These college students are not only the main force of English users and learners in China but also the major netizens on Chinese social media platforms. However, within a cultural context where ‘standards and adherence to norms have traditionally been of paramount importance to the Chinese’ (Kirkpatrick, 2017: 278), the conflicting attitudes and use towards either upholding traditional viewpoints or adopting opposing stances regarding the New Chinglish warrant intriguing and meaningful exploration. Thus, this study aims to explore the connection between their attitudes towards New Chinglish and its usage behaviors on social media among Chinese college students. It seeks to unveil the reasons underlying their attitudes towards the use of New Chinglish. The in-depth exploration reveals a contradictory and uncertain evaluation of their usage of New Chinglish on social media, despite its high level of understandability and acceptability among them. Personal acceptability and preference do not solely determine their attitudes towards their use of New Chinglish on social media; instead, various social factors, such as language inequality, influence their language use behavior and attitudes, leading to a compromise between individual preferences and social influences. Specifically, this study offers insight into the genuine reactions and usage tendencies of English in real-life situations, indicating the future trends in English language development in China.
Xiaoman Liu Esther Jawing xiaofang Zhao ##submission.copyrightStatement## 2024-04-29 2024-04-29 9 4 e002783 e002783 10.47405/mjssh.v9i4.2783 Party Realignment: Ethnic Identity versus Egocentrism among Malaysian Voters https://msocialsciences.com/index.php/mjssh/article/view/2721
This study investigates the dynamics of voting intention concerning party realignment among voters in Malaysia using a Theory of Reasoned Action-based model. It delves into the roles of attitudes and subjective norms in shaping party preferences and aligns with quantitative methodology. A comprehensive self-administered survey questionnaire engaged 450 participants from diverse ethnic backgrounds in the Batang Kali State Constituency to elucidate party realignment complexities. They are chosen using stratified random sampling, based on a race proportion of 5:1:1. The findings reveal that voter attitudes wielded a more significant impact than subjective norms associated with ethnic identity. This outcome underscores the pivotal role of attitudes in influencing decision-making, while the influence of subjective norms remains limited. The research highlights the subjective norm's role in a multicultural context, clarifying that it is not the primary catalyst for party realignment. Instead, personal beliefs (people's egocentric behaviour) play a substantial role in shaping voter attitudes. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the interplay between subjective norms (ethnic identity), attitudes (egocentrism), and party realignment within Malaysia's diverse social landscape. Moreover, they hold significant implications for formulating effective political strategies and government policies within a multicultural society.
Mat Nadzari Ahmad Dahlan Suhaimee Saahar @ Saabar ##submission.copyrightStatement## 2024-04-30 2024-04-30 9 4 e002721 e002721 10.47405/mjssh.v9i4.2721 Assessing the Impact of a Job Interview Skills Training Course: Participants’ Perceptions and Outcomes https://msocialsciences.com/index.php/mjssh/article/view/2785
Job interview skills are essential for job seekers to secure employment. Transcendental meditation, polysemous themes, open text, uncontrolled narrative, and disorienting imagery are the keywords to understand the aesthetic characteristics of Lynch's films. However, so far there are few comprehensive and in-depth interpretations of this movie from the perspective of cinematic sound. Therefore, this study analyzes the film from the perspective of sound design and concludes that the unique sound effects in Mulholland Drive can suggest danger and subtly manipulate the audience's emotions. In addition, the human voice in Mulholland Drive has the characteristics of mixing and breaking, and the human voice can establish a new relationship between sound and picture through the audio intervention, and it can also make the character's identity "out of focus" and other artistic effects. Finally, the jazz music in Mulholland Drive can foretell the unknown and create a strong contrast with the narrative of the movie, and other styles of soundtracks in the movie can create a dreamy and perverse ambient space.
