Abstract

The conservation of Chinese Visual Arts Intangible Cultural Heritage (CVAICH) is threatened by decreasing youth participation, accelerated by globalization and fast digital evolution. Older cultural traditions become marginalized as generations age and move toward new entertainment and digital media. New technologies like virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and social media offer new ways to improve access and promote engagement with heritage. However, to what extent these technologies facilitate rich, extended cultural engagement is uncertain. This systematic review integrates interdisciplinary studies to examine the effect of digitalization and emotional factors on youth participation in CVAICH based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) insights. Findings are that digital channels are essential in boosting perceived behavioral control, reducing hindrances to access, and providing interactive learning opportunities. In parallel, emotional engagement, specifically cultural pride, nostalgia, and identification with identity, emphasizes attitudes and subjective norms to create persistent participation. The study synthesizes and evaluates current research, pointing out gaps in empirical testing and advocating for longitudinal studies to assess the long-term effects of digital heritage initiatives. By using the synergy between digital affordances and emotional resonance, this research points to the significance of multimodal engagement approaches. Experimental techniques must be examined in future research to test such interactions and find ways new technologies, such as artificial intelligence and the metaverse, can improve CVAICH involvement among young people.
